Save Pensions and Planet have launched a petition for USS climate and ethical policy changes and governance reform. Signatories are asked to support
- USS ceasing investments in coal, oil and gas, given that they have consistently underperformed renewable energy investments, and they cause climate damage
- USS writing a shareholder voting policy that requires that USS casts its votes in all companies (such as car-maker, construction, and electricity firms) to require switching to clean energy as fast as technology allows
- USS writing a shareholder voting policy that requires portfolio companies to comply with International Labour Organisation and European Social Charter standards on labour rights and pensions
- Replacing the existing 5 unelected USS directors with directors elected by beneficiaries (that is, university staff) and all being removable by their appointees
